The new Cervélo R5 is stiff, fast and extremely light. With a weight of just 5.97kg in size 56 (including Spare 34|37 SL wheels), the bike remains well below the UCI limit of 6.8kg. All thanks to frame, fork, cockpit and wheels.
The frame in size 56 now weighs 651 grams and the front fork only 298 grams, being one of the lightest in its class. With just a thin brush of paint on both, you get to 959 grams for the set, a reduction of 426 grams. More importantly, without sacrificing on stiffness.
The new integrated HB18 cockpit saves another 150 grams on weight versus its predecessor and saving 2 watts on energy at the same time. The new Reserve 34|37 SL wheels add another 60 grams to the weight reduction.
The handling of the new R5 remained largely intact with respect to some subtle updates. The bottom bracket height has been slightly adjusted to make room for wider (29 mm) tires. In addition, the geometry of the frame has now been aligned with that of the aero-oriented S5, making it easier for riders to switch between the two models without changing their riding position. The bike has a slightly lower stack and longer reach. Especially taller users benefit from the updated geometry, even riders like Jorgenson and van Aert can ride a bike weighing just (the UCI approved) 6.8 kg.
So, if you are looking for a light and classic looking bike, and you want to set new KoM records, don’t hesitate to consider the new Cervélo R5 as your new buy. But everything comes at a price of course.
